It’s a (belated) Guardians of The Galaxy Weekend!
What a whimsical, comical, action-packed movie! Although some heavy world destroying stuff was going on, the comedy kept it light and fun. The Guardians were a very interesting mashup of characters and it was fun to see how they came together and worked as a team. Each character seems to have a different skill set and had their opportunity to shine in the film. Rocket and Groot seemed to stand out as fan-favorites. Although Star Lord was the leader and the main character, I probably liked him least. I felt his character was the least interesting and his comic ‘moments’ fell short for me. I did still find his back story intriguing and would be interested to learn more about his father and how he relates to his origin. Zoe Saldana and Bautista looked awesome as aliens with their different color and textured skin. They both kicked some serious butt and worked as the muscle of the group. All in all I really enjoyed watching this film. It was nice to just sit back and laugh.

Concept – Wonderful mash-up of the Hot Wheels toy cars with the Delorean from Back to the Future.
Composition – I really enjoy the combination of the well rendered vehicle with the altered Hot Wheels logo. The motion conveyed by the shape of the banner with flames describes the speed of this infamous time traveling machine.

Texture – Wonderful hatching used to articulate the wiry wolf fur. The short thin strokes also create nice complexity in the design.
Color – The different shades of gray nicely describe the shape of the wolf head. The textures also create wonderful variations of color by using different stroke lengths.

Color – I really enjoy the contrast and transition of the warm oranges and yellows in the bottom to the cool blues and grays in the top of the design.
Composition – The design is tilted on its vertical axis creating wonderful dynamic excitement. The swipe like stokes help exaggerate the tilt and create action.

05/14/14 Top 3 Pick: First Shot
ATTITUDE! Both Han and Rocket are a shoot first ask questions later kind of guys. Rendered here in a tough, “cool guy” slouch, Rocket looks relaxed and nonchalant. Of course, hidden below this calm demeanor is his pistol pointed straight at its victim. I love his well illustrated raccoon face and his highly expressive eyes. The bold blocks and rough outlines of the letter forms justly fit the tough guy persona of both characters. I also really enjoy how the bright yellow of the fire really stands out against the earth tones of this design. And yes George Lucas, Han shot first!

Surprise! I picked a Dr. Who shirt! Weird huh!? Tah dah, tah dah, tah dah, tah dah (that was my best onomatopoeia of the show’s intro music). I really enjoy this clever mash-up. Exploring space and time, the Tardis could definitely be in an episode of the Twilight Zone. Nice, simple outline of the tardis floating through space. Wonderful translation of the letter forms including: the odd-shaped serifs, various baselines, x-heights, and shifting letter axis. As you guys know, I am a sucker for typography and black and white designs!

05/14/14 Top 3 Pick: It’s Hip To Be Square
It is hip to be square, in a pixellated digital world! I love the angle in which this design is presented. It works great for the little 3-d objects and block letter forms. All the little objects seem to shift planes which make them appear in motion. Having the design be in simple black, white, and bright magenta definitely helps give it a digital appearance.

Target you attention to this design. These two pals are portrayed in a ready for action dynamic pose. The figures are contained in a target symbol, which is repeated in the design.
