05/19/14 Top 2 Pick; Armored Maiden: The Hunter

Watch out Mother Brain! Samus is back and badder than ever! This hunter definitely knows how to Rock & Roll (wink wink, nudge nudge). Incredible action hero pose. I really enjoy how the composition really holds true to the original Iron Maiden cover. The design has been mostly contained within a circle in order to translate it cleanly into a shirt design. Still, the pose, scene, and fonts are spot on. This armored damsel looks like she really kicked ass during this battle. Standing up, flag in hand, and walking over a mountain of fallen opponents. Wonderful detail placed on the structure and appearance of the armor. I really enjoy the torn, jagged flag and the smoke still bellowing out of the arm cannon. The combination of warm oranges and reds with the cool blues are nicely matched up in similar earth tones harmoniously uniting the color palette.

Going forward I will be posting only the daily designs which truly captivate me so I can give them their due. 05/19/14 Top 2 Pick; Boba The Animated Series

Have you noticed all the Star Wars and Batman designs lately? Well here’s a little of both. The lone bounty hunter stands tall, surveying the scene. Wonderful, strong silhouette stands surrounded by warm copper tones and cool glowing blue details. Boba’s armor, jetpack, and cape cast a strikingly similar silhouette to Batman, which fits nicely. I really enjoy the brown copper color which I feel I rarely see paired with that bright blue. The contrast of these two colors gives the design dimension. As a designer, it is always fun to try different color combinations. Sometimes they work and unfortunately sometimes they don’t. I think this color combination was a success, I’ll have to store it in my color combo memory bank.

Cool down this summer with Elsa and Shirt Punch. These Frosty Flakes are Grrrrrreat! and magically delicious! Wonderful, well-balanced composition. I love the variation of color and thickness of the outlines. Elsa’s large bright eyes and wind-swept braided hair looks well rendered. The rest of the design consists of a wintry background with snowflakes for a well-rounded composition with depth. I greatly enjoy the snowflake cut out shape that helps the figure’s cape transition to the shirt. Yes, I do catch these small details, and I love them!

GODZILLA WEEKEND!

*WARNING: This post contains spoilers for the newly released Godzilla movie. Readers beware!

Okay, let me preface this pseudo-review by letting you know this was the first Godzilla movie I’ve ever seen. Okay, OKAY stop yelling at me! I know! The big lizard just hasn’t been on my radar until this year. The trailer looked good and all the shirt designs lately had me excited to see what this new movie had to offer!

First of all, I can’t talk about the movie without mentioning my favorite human characters, Dr. Ichiro (Ken Watanabe) and Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston). I very much enjoyed the scientist perspective showing the history of what we encountered leading up to the events of the film. The scene in Japan with Walter White err I mean Bryan Cranston was heartbreaking and set the stage for the human motivation of the film. Both of these characters made me care about the story and had me emotionally invested. Let me also give a small shout out to the writer for not portraying the military as the cold, hard-line prick stereotype, especially Admiral Stenz (David Strathairn). As it became increasingly clear humanity was not in control of the monsters, he began to put his faith in Dr. Ichiro’s belief of Godzilla as “Earth’s protector”. It was nice to have a sympathetic and non-butthead guy in charge for a change right?

Okay, so Walter White err I mean Bryan Cranston’s death was very surprising to me. I definitely did not see that coming. It made sense from the perspective of the story they were telling, including the 15 year time jump, but I was still shocked to see arguably the biggest star in the film die so early. At that point, the focus shifts to his son whose name I can’t remember (the guy from Kick Ass). I really like that actor, but his performance felt stiff and awkward at times. So if I have a nitpick, it was this shift in narrative focus. The son’s family was cookie cut right out of every disaster movie you’ve ever seen. The military dad, the wife/girlfriend nurse, and the kid who just wants to see his dad. I would have enjoyed the movie more if the story went on more of a “Walter White err I mean Bryan Cranston help’s save the world and get revenge for his wife arc”.

So how awesome was Godzilla himself!? I totally got caught in the misdirection the film set up. Maybe because I hadn’t seen a Godzilla movie before? I was totally caught off guard when the initial monster reveal was not Godzilla. I am vaguely aware of the Godzilla universe and that there is a monster named Mothra, however. I really enjoyed the easter egg of the Mothra tank in the quarantine zone. Very cool!

The monster designs were one of my favorite aspects of the movie. I can’t count the number of times I jumped when a monster came out of nowhere or made a noise. So intense! I very much enjoyed the build-up to the final stand-off at the end. I especially enjoyed the way Godzilla “powered up” and “atomic blasts” the Muto’s. I think I might have said “holy shit!” out loud when it happened! It was a super cool moment and one I definitely wasn’t expecting as a Godzilla newbie. And that final kill-shot of the female Muto was freaking epic! It was reminiscent of the T-Rex scene from the end of the first Jurassic Park movie. Sent chills down my spine and my fists pumping in the air!!! I can definitely call myself a Godzilla fan now :).

Overall I’d recommend you check out Godzilla even if you’re a newbie like me. While you’re at the movies this weekend, be sure to check out all the AMAZING Godzilla shirt available this week!

05/16/14 Top 3 Pick; All Work and No Play…

Instead of the infamous “Here’s Johnny!” scene from The Shining, we have a another significant scene depicted straight from the film. Jack Torrance is watching his family outside the hotel with a 1,000-yard stare. You begin to see his descent into madness. I enjoy how Jack Nickolson is portrayed in detail using small blocks of text. The blocks of text create a disturbed, heather texture due to the small positive and negative spaces. It creates visual static of noise which justly fits the demented state of Jack Torrance in The Shining. I love the font selected for the type. It is a typewriter machine style font. I can almost hear Jack’s insane click click click of his repetitive typing “All work no play makes Jack a dull boy”.

05/16/14 Top 3 Pick; This is MY Room!

Super cute design. This little man is ready to defend his territory from what goes bump in the night. He heroically holds up his sword ready to attack, but also holds on tight to his teddy bear companion. I love how the artist makes that doorway glow! By using the bright green and blues as an outline around the figures and door they almost magically pop off the screen. The artist also nicely varies the thick thin ratio of the figure to give them more or less light, adding dimension and shape to the characters.

I remember not too long ago, going to the movie theater and falling in love with the new X-Men: Days of Future Past movie posters. The poster and concept were striking and I also greatly enjoy the X-Men movies. It also doesn’t hurt that I love James McAvoy! This idea also nicely translates for Dr. Who. This is a wonderful combination of both Doctors. Having one face appear within another face nicely depicts transformation. It also nicely shows the change in time period of an individual being. I also love how appealing and enthralling the bright blue monotones in dynamic angles appear on top of the grayscale image.

05/13/14 Top 3 Pick: Poke Fighter II

This shirt is a KO! I guess this is the next evolution of fighters. Awesome collection of mashed up characters featuring the original eight “World Warriors”: Ryu, Ken, Guile, Zangief, Dhalsim, Chun-Li, Blanka, and E. Honda. The little figures are nicely placed together in their action pose. Each Pokémon figure nicely emulates a Street Fighter through their outfits or hair style. Blanka/Pikachu is a particular standout. Great solid bold colors and heavy bold lines. I enjoy the combination of both franchises’ fonts to create this hybrid bold block title.

Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus. Sailor Moon and her fellow guardians are all here in a bold team pose. 05/12/14 Top 3 Pick; No Love

Some of my favorite shirts are ones with subtle video game references. Something a non-gamer might not look at twice. Mario himself is not present and neither are Princess Peach or Bowser, who is only referenced in name. Interesting tattoo style design. The composition is packed with many components which are all nicely balanced. The X-shaped pipes in the background radiate outward while the light-colored wings in the center help unite and brighten the design. The dagger stabs the center and serves as a focal point to lead the eye to the text wrapped around the banner. I very much enjoy having the text incorporated and wrapped around the design instead of having it float elsewhere. Interesting use of a red turtle shell in the center with the dagger instead of the usual heart.

Who said girls can’t be tough? This strong superheroine, portrayed in a lovely rose shade, is ready to put up a good fight. The silhouette is easily recognizable as Wonder Woman by portraying her arm cuffs, head bead, and long curled locks. The letter forms in the foreground are large, bold, and extended creating a wide wall of letters which the figure’s arms look ready to break down. I very much enjoy the placement of the pink breast cancer ribbon within the letter forms. It snugly fits on top of the negative areas and is outlined slightly thinner which help prevent it from clashing with the letter.

SEGA! This detailed info-graphic of this retro console is nicely laid out. The first generation of the Genesis console is on display and not the later models. Fun fact, the Genesis is known as the Mega Drive in some parts of the world! The thin white lines on a dark background have a CAD like quality. The components are nicely organized and unified. The controllers are placed in a yin-yang format. The adapter and cables both are laid in a tall rectangular shape around the wide rectangular game cartridge. I enjoy the little labels and arrows pointed to various parts adding different layers of information. This shirt makes me want to bust out Sonic & Knuckles, Streets of Rage 2, and all the other 16-bit classics!

Once Upon A Tee is a weekly t-shirt site which offers designs for 7 days, unlike the daily sites. Once Upon A Tee offers a collection of designs which are usually part of a theme or franchise instead of the daily design model. You can either buy the whole lot for a reduced price, or pick any individual designs that catch your eye. Each design is something an independent artist created and submitted. Because of this, the styles and subjects can vary wildly and add to the excitement of buying these unique shirts. Once Upon A Tee offers their shirts in 3 styles: Men’s, Women’s, and Youth. They also offer hoodies, phone cases, and mouse pads if that’s your thing.

I recently purchased Tom Trager’s “Justice” design from them and I was thrilled when it arrived! Ordering my Women’s style shirt was a cinch. Creating an account takes only a minute of your time or you can simply check out as a guest. They conveniently offer payment via PayPal or major credit card. I recommend creating an account in order to accumulate “Rupees”, a form of currency which can be redeemed later for a discount on future orders!

I placed my order on April 20^th and the shirt was shipped on April 26^th. That’s 6 business days to print and ship the shirt which seems about right. From there, USPS snail mail took 4 business days to arrive at my doorstep. That’s 9 business days from purchase, to shirt-in-hand. My experience may have been faster than usual because I ordered my shirt on the last day of availability. Your time may vary based on when you order. If you order as soon as the design goes up, you’ll have to wait for the week to end before the printing process begins. Just a fair warning!

Now, onto the shirt itself.

First off, Once Upon A Tee did an extremely good job separating the ink colors. Each color seems to have been printed where each color was intended. I don’t see any unintentional bleeding of the colors or smudges. The edges are clean and crisp. The lines are even and straight. The colors themselves turned out very, VERY close to the digital image of the design. This is very impressive considering colors may vary from one screen to another. The half tones used in the background turned out very fine in the shirt. Last but not least, the output does look like Chris Evans!

The shirt used for the print is a Gildan brand “Ultra Cotton” tee, 100% cotton composition. The women’s medium fit me just fine. It was “straight cut” and not tapered like some women’s shirts. This leads to a somewhat loose but comfortable fit. Perfect for lounging around the house, showing off to your friends, or maybe even fighting crime!

My only nitpick or regret is I didn’t order the hoodie too! I love this design!

In the end, Once Upon A Tee is a fantastic site for patrons and artists alike. They offer many different designers an opportunity to share their work for an extended period of time and deliver those designs faithfully to their customers. If you’re on the fence about purchasing from this site, I highly recommend you do so. Once Upon A Tee didn’t just sell me a shirt, they ensured I would enjoy my purchase happily ever after!

Bright and appealing royal blue color behind a simplified black and white image. Although the figure is rendered in high contrast, there is a great amount of detail portrayed through textures and forms. This is especially evident in the well-formed human skull. I really enjoy the “Sherlock” hidden in the folds and curves of the figure’s garment. I also very much enjoy the use of the chemical molecules, gears, and binary in the background to create a wonderful, interesting texture. It also adds nice complexity which represents the figure’s mental processes. Brilliant!

Wonderful render of this aquatic villain. Her curling, bright purple tentacles pull you in while her open reaching hands seem to go to grab you for a taste of these yummy treats. I love that her large voluptuous arms break the rectangular frame of the design. The treatment of the larger text is interesting and dynamic due to the angle in which it is in and looks great behind a well-balanced, symmetrical foreground. This damask print is covered in masks! Is this design available for wallpaper? Wonderful pattern full of lovely little details. I love how at first glance the design seems so simple and elegant, then under careful inspection, you discover it is filled with lovely and nerdy masks from all over pop culture! 05/08/14 Top 3 Pick; It’s Only Forever

This shirt is only available for 24 hours, not long at all! This mystical, magical design is absolutely dreamy. The whimsical curls and filigree nicely frame the beautifully detailed faces. I love the way that David Bowie’s face and hair lead or transform into the owl’s body. His spiky, fanned out hair resembles the fanciful spread out wings of the owl. Amazing treatment of the main letter forms in the top right. They’re tall and gracefully twist and wind together filling that area with interest equal to the rest of the design. The scroll which contains the subtext also nicely winds and has a nice torn texture. I also really enjoy that the whole design seems to be in antique whites and browns or in light sepia tones, especially on the brown shirt option.

The Frozen shirts keep on coming with this villainous mash-up! This tiny snow queen dancer floats magically in a snow globe, imprisoned by the ingenious Dr. Victor Fries (aka Mr. Freeze). Is he preserving her like his beloved wife Nora, or perhaps trying to harness her frigid powers for his own nefarious purpose? The cool blues and teals look great for both characters. Both are nicely encased using simple thick and thin white lines to show shape and highlight. Something tells me this villain won’t just “let it go” if you know what I mean! GOJIRA!! GOJIRA!! This Japanese terror this way comes! Wonderful, strong design with large bold block shapes. I very much enjoy the simple but strong background. The round red circle seems to represent Japan. By keeping some areas smooth and crisp while other areas of the circle are distressed it metaphorically represent the destruction of this giant lizard’s path. Godzilla is nicely rendered out of the negative space and the distress adds nice shape and texture.

“They’re all gonna laugh at you!” This image is just as incredibly shocking as the events of the movie Carrie. This might be the first shirt I’ve ever seen that actually scares me! The design really captures the anger, fear, and pure horror of the moment. The red pools and drips wonderfully delineate the negative space creating the figure of a scorned girl. The artist did a wonderful job of giving the design just the right amount of information to create the image. The contrast of the bright white teeth and bright blue eyes help reveal her facial expression of pure anger and fury. I absolute love her delicate hands that seem to writhe in pain and direct her power.

Classic good vs. evil. What an amazingly complex image. The gigantic, Lovecraftian Cthulhu made up of dark negative space with bright gleaming eyes towers over this cityscape made up of thin, long strokes. While the little hero in the bright positive space jets up in the center ready to defeat the monster. I love the texture created by the slanted sketch hatching to show the destruction. It nicely contrasts with the soft billowy look of the clouds above.

This hypnotizing, maniacal grin is share by both The Joker and Oogie Boogie. Batman replaces Jack Skellington, standing tall over the scene. Batman’s wind-blown cape creates interesting wild shapes also mimicked throughout Joker’s crazed appearance. The city scape along with the “HA” signs create wonderful visual complexity and keep the eye jumping around the design. The lighter long stokes in the background along with the lighter figures in the teeth nicely break up the solid yellow plains keeping the design active. The Batman logo background also mimics the pumpkin shape of The Pumpkin King, Jack.

This Dark Brotherhood sign would nicely mark the underground settlement in Skyrim. Wonderful, well-balanced composition with bilateral symmetry. I enjoy how the crossed arms create an arrow which points to the red hand print. The thick red outline really makes the design pop and serves as a nice clean trim around the design. The skeletal figure is mostly made up of soft grays, except for the white on the blades, giving them a highlight and a shine.

“There’s no shame in fear, my father told me, what matters is how we face it.” This dark Crow stands strong within the cool, arctic blues and whites of the lone wolf image. Wonderful image within an image. Jon’s dark garment is created out of a nice silhouette with the underlying image showing through to add textures and form. I love the wild strokes on the wolf’s collar area forming its fur and the appearance of ice crystals. At first glance I was captivated by the large image of the wolf, big and bright against the dark background. The flying crow naturally creates the form of the wolf’s eye slit. Beautiful symbolism showing the duality of Jon’s allegiance, to house Stark and his own brothers of The Night’s Watch.

The checkered floor serves as a wonderful way to express space and perspective. The pattern is also used as a form of ornamentation to show the lavish Red Keep of King’s Landing. The use of the bright, golden color on the wall sconces, hair, and glowing eye unifies the scene with the larger lion image. This design definitely embodies the Lannister words, Hear Me Roar.

Every (under)dog has his day. Arya Stark will have her revenge, but will she lose herself in the process? She has known many names and perhaps more: Arry, Weasel, Boy, Horseface, Lumpyhead, Cat of the Canals, the Blind Girl, Mercy. The direwolf sigil in the background suggests she remembers who she is, but for how long? With seemingly all of Westeros on her list, she marches forward with her companion, Needle. The blue, gray, and black color scheme expresses the grim events that have occurred to her family and the dark path she is on. Her facial expression is harsh, angry, and determined. Wonderful sketch-like texture used for the figure adds complexity and stress. My favorite part of this design is the text. Having the type at an angle shows perspective, depth, and works as a path to destruction. Remember, all men must die.
