Rapunzel, Rapunzel let down your long hair. This wonderfully long and tangled, rope like mane creates a beautifully nouveau frame. I highly fancy this color palette. The cool blues and bright purples create a glowing evening scene. The hazy wash effect in the background and light circles look magical. The figure’s face seems to glow in delight.

“Before he came down here, it never snowed. And afterwards, it did”. This design portrays both figures in a romantic and dark embrace under the snow. I enjoy the treatment of the highly stylized hair leading to the winding frame. The figures appear sad and feature elongated bodies creating a somber mood. The gothic, enlarged bladed-hands are almost as long as the figures for emphasis on the impossible touch.

“I have all the characteristics of a human being: blood, flesh, skin, hair; but not a single, clear, identifiable emotion, except for greed and disgust…” I’d add vanity to that list Mr. Bateman! This gruesome selfie appears to be an homage to a certain sex scene from American Psycho where Patrick appears more interested in his own appearance. Well illustrated muscular torso that this psycho would be proud of. Interesting and simple blood splatter background. Nice foreshortening used to place this figure in the infamous pose. I highly enjoy the small slice detail used on the typography in the foreground.

“Stay where you belong: in my memories…”. So many details in this Final Fantasy VII design! The wolf’s head in the background, Sephiroth’s swirling figure hints at a spinning tire from Fenrir (Cloud’s motorcycle), and slicing between them is Cloud’s buster sword. This design has a wonderful composition with well-balanced figures. The long outward circular stokes give the design movement.

Utinni! A delightfully playful mash-up of the quirky grocer and everyone’s favorite space scavengers, the Jawas. The design has an interesting texture, appearing to be printed on burlap which visually conveys the Jawas’ garments or a burlap sack which typically contains gourmet food. The quality of the descriptive line drawing and font appear very similar to the Trader Joes‘ logo.

Happy anniversary Simpsons! It’s The Blinky from the Black Lagoon! Marge looks terrified as the Gill-Man styled Blinky carries her from Lake Springfield. Both Blinky as the monster and Marge as the damsel in distress, are nicely portrayed. In enjoy the distressed texture of the design on the dark green shirt. The simple water ripples around the monster’s legs along with the deep green, completes the design without a need for a background.

04/19/14 Top 3 Pick; Who’s this?

No offense intended to the many gorgeous (and I do mean, MANY) Doctor Who designs out there, but it’s refreshing to see a well thought out mash-up that makes sense for both universes. Jack is pondering the Tardis door and the many places and times it may lead. One could just imagine what a hilarious time traveler Jack would make and the unique and gothic spin Burton would put on the concept. The bark texture on the tree is also transferred on to the Tardis, giving it an appearance of being painted on. I very much enjoy the orange background. Its simple use of positive and negative space is wonderful, and very descriptive without attracting too much attention.

Speaking of repeat designs… Frozen sure is popular these days! You’ll find no mash-up here, however. Just an overall gorgeous design that employs solid colors and forms. The artist wonderfully uses simple lines and forms on a medium blue background to illustrate these lovely figures. I especially enjoy the curves and bends of the shape of both figures’ hair. The figures’ facial expressions makes the viewer wonder what these two sisters are chatting about.

I can imagine the Martians taking over Vegas and living it up with these uniquely alien playing cards. I love the blues, greens, and reds used in the alien brains and the nice shine on the head-gear. Interesting, undulating lines and decorative frame used as a background.

Very nice thick lined illustration of tauntaun keeping warm in a cute sweater. The chilled lettering and nice striped block color background nicely conveys the frosty beverage and destination.

Watch out for this Tenderheart Bear, especially when the Care moon is full! Interesting juxtaposition of the bright, happy colors to the muscular and fierce werewolf. Wonderful illustration of this bright pink creature that looks like he just ripped off his clothes. I enjoy the smiling sun next to the figure’s big long teeth. You can’t help but smile at this shirt!

Recommended for ages 16 and up! No one can resist the mistress of all evil! Maleficent is not responsible for any death, injury, coma, or true love you may incur. Being a sucker for typography, I enjoy the wide, evil horned shaped letter forms. The bright purples,greens, and yellows with the skull in the bottom center gives these design the appearance of poison. The figure’s face and the winding vines in the background are a luring and enthralling.

“Booker, are you afraid of God?” “No. But I’m afraid of you.” Here we have Elizabeth, the damsel not quite in distress. This design depicts many elements of Bioshock Infinite in which Elizabeth takes control. We see the tables have turned on her jailor, Songbird. In the background, one of Elizabeth’s tears is open to Paris and is also foreshadowed by the Eiffel Tower in the foreground. Keen observers may even notice the Return of the Jedi on the theater marquee! This is an interesting circular composition in which the main figure appears to sit on a pedestal. Wonderful purple blue hues to show the tear effect. That should be interesting to see with a spot gloss, perhaps giving the design dimension. Elizabeth’s face is looking up and away. It carries emotion and makes her seem pensive or reflecting.

I think this design is entirely original, but if it’s referencing something, please let me know! I highly enjoy the color palette used in this design. The wonderful striation of the long thin stokes gives the effect of rain coming down. The rain nicely defines the figure in the scene. The neon colors reflected in the rain are nicely balanced throughout the design. The negative space figures in the bottom foreground are wonderful and create a nice transition from design to shirt.

Hilarious mash-up of Indiana Jones and Star Wars. Han and Chewie are portraying Indiana and his father, Henry Jones. Something tells me Sean Connery would not be amused to be portrayed as the hairy wookie! Lots of interesting textures. Wookie fur flying in the wind. Scruffy Han in a fedora. Descriptive rough and distressed texture on the vehicle and side cart. I enjoy the brown and green color palette.

Looks like the Mushroom Kingdom fell to a mushroom cloud. I wonder if Mario got a kiss with Dixie? The barrels are a nice call back to the original Donkey Kong arcade game which originally pit these two foes against each other. This design portrays an interesting scene with Donkey Kong dominating the composition. Mario in a kneeling down pose shows his emotions without showing facial features.

A delightfully dark mash-up of Batman and Dick Tracy! It’s easy to imagine The Dark Knight fighting the organized crime in Tracy’s noir world. It’s not that much different from Gotham! Amazing! I love Harry Potter. I love Megan Lara. I love this shirt. From the subject matter and content to all the small details. This potions professor’s facial features and scowl are clean and expressive. The bright blue patronus in the foreground nicely balances the large amount of dark in the design from Snape’s cape. The light delicate Lilly flowers and the evil Dark Mark visually display Snape’s duality.
