Hello loyal readers! I’m shaking things up a bit today so bear with me…

So I only picked 2 shirt designs today. I am changing it up a little because no other design really caught my attention. Going forward I will be posting only the daily designs which truly captivate me so I can give them their due. I don’t want to be stuck with a rigid 3 design quota, and this allows me more wiggle room. I hope you enjoy!

05/19/14 Top 2 Pick; Boba The Animated Series

Have you noticed all the Star Wars and Batman designs lately? Well here’s a little of both. The lone bounty hunter stands tall, surveying the scene. Wonderful, strong silhouette stands surrounded by warm copper tones and cool glowing blue details. Boba’s armor, jetpack, and cape cast a strikingly similar silhouette to Batman, which fits nicely. I really enjoy the brown copper color which I feel I rarely see paired with that bright blue. The contrast of these two colors gives the design dimension. As a designer, it is always fun to try different color combinations. Sometimes they work and unfortunately sometimes they don’t. I think this color combination was a success, I’ll have to store it in my color combo memory bank.

05/19/14 Top 2 Pick; Frosty Flakes

Cool down this summer with Elsa and Shirt Punch. These Frosty Flakes are Grrrrrreat! and magically delicious! Wonderful, well-balanced composition. I love the variation of color and thickness of the outlines. Elsa’s large bright eyes and wind-swept braided hair looks well rendered. The rest of the design consists of a wintry background with snowflakes for a well-rounded composition with depth. I greatly enjoy the snowflake cut out shape that helps the figure’s cape transition to the shirt. Yes, I do catch these small details, and I love them!

05/08/14 Top 3 Pick; It’s Only Forever

This shirt is only available for 24 hours, not long at all! This mystical, magical design is absolutely dreamy. The whimsical curls and filigree nicely frame the beautifully detailed faces. I love the way that David Bowie’s face and hair lead or transform into the owl’s body. His spiky, fanned out hair resembles the fanciful spread out wings of the owl. Amazing treatment of the main letter forms in the top right. They’re tall and gracefully twist and wind together filling that area with interest equal to the rest of the design. The scroll which contains the subtext also nicely winds and has a nice torn texture. I also really enjoy that the whole design seems to be in antique whites and browns or in light sepia tones, especially on the brown shirt option.

05/08/14 Top 3 Pick; Frozen in Time

The Frozen shirts keep on coming with this villainous mash-up! This tiny snow queen dancer floats magically in a snow globe, imprisoned by the ingenious Dr. Victor Fries (aka Mr. Freeze). Is he preserving her like his beloved wife Nora, or perhaps trying to harness her frigid powers for his own nefarious purpose? The cool blues and teals look great for both characters. Both are nicely encased using simple thick and thin white lines to show shape and highlight. Something tells me this villain won’t just “let it go” if you know what I mean! Anybody have a Bat signal?

05/08/14 Top 3 Pick; Red Lizard

GOJIRA!! GOJIRA!! This Japanese terror this way comes! Wonderful, strong design with large bold block shapes. I very much enjoy the simple but strong background. The round red circle seems to represent Japan. By keeping some areas smooth and crisp while other areas of the circle are distressed it metaphorically represent the destruction of this giant lizard’s path. Godzilla is nicely rendered out of the negative space and the distress adds nice shape and texture.

Hilarious mash-up of Indiana Jones and Star Wars. Han and Chewie are portraying Indiana and his father, Henry Jones. Something tells me Sean Connery would not be amused to be portrayed as the hairy wookie! Lots of interesting textures. Wookie fur flying in the wind. Scruffy Han in a fedora. Descriptive rough and distressed texture on the vehicle and side cart. I enjoy the brown and green color palette.

Elsa the Riveter! An inspiring figure for young women to embrace who they are and let go of trying to be someone else. This strong female character is gorgeously rendered. I enjoy her light smooth skin and detailed garment. The delicate snowflakes and swirls make an interesting background.

Looks like the Mushroom Kingdom fell to a mushroom cloud. I wonder if Mario got a kiss with Dixie? The barrels are a nice call back to the original Donkey Kong arcade game which originally pit these two foes against each other. This design portrays an interesting scene with Donkey Kong dominating the composition. Mario in a kneeling down pose shows his emotions without showing facial features.

Do you want to build a sundae? Or was it snowman? Arendelle’s Ice Beauty is nicely portrayed in this whimsical design; her flawless warm face against her cool winding, intricate hair. I enjoy all the wonderful little snow flakes and twirling patterns that add texture. The ornate letter forms are fit for a queen.

A delightfully dark mash-up of Batman and Dick Tracy! It’s easy to imagine The Dark Knight fighting the organized crime in Tracy’s noir world. It’s not that much different from Gotham! Interesting composition contained within the circular frame. I love the use of negative space with simple solid color shapes to describe the dark figure. Provocative use of basic colors also expressed by Dick Tracy.

03/28/14 Top 3 Pick; Biotropolis

Andrew Ryan’s worst nightmare! A wonderful dystopian mash up. Just as Freder had to journey under the ground to learn the ugly truth of his city, so too does the audience of Bioshock go under the sea. The elongated design with the figure at the bottom mimics the depths to which the characters go through. The geometric, art deco style is justly used to convey both subject matter. I enjoy the warm antique gold tones on the black background. The typography uses cut out, angular shapes again tying both subject matter up nicely.

The shirt illuminates Elsa, The Ice Queen’s magic. The impressive glow effect achieved by the contrast of the bright blues against the dark background is incredible. I greatly enjoy the out of focus snowflakes represented by lighter circles floating in the mid-ground and background. Her cape has a nice dynamic pose defined out of the negative space. Else’s pose is interesting, as the figure is facing away and looking back. The glow around her head keeps the focus on her.

03/19/14 Top 3 Pick; Frozen in Time and Space

I love the amazing treatment of colors in this design. The loving warm tones given to the outside world show the contrast of the cool, frigid blue hues inside Elsa’s palace. The use of colors to show transparence of the ice on the Tardis show the artist’s exemplary color theory. Wonderful rendering of a disney figure with light teal tones and gently outlined to stand out in the foreground. This design is offered in 3 different color options, blue, teal and gray. I enjoy the design on the blue shirt the most. The darker shirt gives the design a delightful contrast and creates glimmer in Elsa’s dress.

All Link needs is a Light Cycle. Incredible use of green and white on a black background to create a shining glow effect. The character is nicely rendered and integrated with Tron details with use of limited colors. I enjoy the futurist, blocky, glowing typography treatment in the center of the design. The details of the floor and background are wonderful and add dimensionality, making the character appear to be standing on a plate on the grid.

I love zombies. The Walking Dead is definitely one of my favorite shows. The use of movie quality makeup and special effects in a show is amazing. The detailed creations of Greg Nicotero are not lost in the single color zombie portrait. This entire shirt design is made up if a single color using positive and negative spaces. The other characters, Rick and The Governor, are also shown in detail even with a lack of color. The white bars are evenly balanced, abrupt, and stark on the black background, showing each portrait as a bullet point. Although the design is simple, it contains expressive textures with the feel of a post-apocalyptic horror.
