This shirt is only available for 24 hours, not long at all! This mystical, magical design is absolutely dreamy. The whimsical curls and filigree nicely frame the beautifully detailed faces. I love the way that David Bowie’s face and hair lead or transform into the owl’s body. His spiky, fanned out hair resembles the fanciful spread out wings of the owl. Amazing treatment of the main letter forms in the top right. They’re tall and gracefully twist and wind together filling that area with interest equal to the rest of the design. The scroll which contains the subtext also nicely winds and has a nice torn texture. I also really enjoy that the whole design seems to be in antique whites and browns or in light sepia tones, especially on the brown shirt option.

The Frozen shirts keep on coming with this villainous mash-up! This tiny snow queen dancer floats magically in a snow globe, imprisoned by the ingenious Dr. Victor Fries (aka Mr. Freeze). Is he preserving her like his beloved wife Nora, or perhaps trying to harness her frigid powers for his own nefarious purpose? The cool blues and teals look great for both characters. Both are nicely encased using simple thick and thin white lines to show shape and highlight. Something tells me this villain won’t just “let it go” if you know what I mean! Anybody have a Bat signal?

GOJIRA!! GOJIRA!! This Japanese terror this way comes! Wonderful, strong design with large bold block shapes. I very much enjoy the simple but strong background. The round red circle seems to represent Japan. By keeping some areas smooth and crisp while other areas of the circle are distressed it metaphorically represent the destruction of this giant lizard’s path. Godzilla is nicely rendered out of the negative space and the distress adds nice shape and texture.

“They’re all gonna laugh at you!” This image is just as incredibly shocking as the events of the movie Carrie. This might be the first shirt I’ve ever seen that actually scares me! The design really captures the anger, fear, and pure horror of the moment. The red pools and drips wonderfully delineate the negative space creating the figure of a scorned girl. The artist did a wonderful job of giving the design just the right amount of information to create the image. The contrast of the bright white teeth and bright blue eyes help reveal her facial expression of pure anger and fury. I absolute love her delicate hands that seem to writhe in pain and direct her power.

Classic good vs. evil. What an amazingly complex image. The gigantic, Lovecraftian Cthulhu made up of dark negative space with bright gleaming eyes towers over this cityscape made up of thin, long strokes. While the little hero in the bright positive space jets up in the center ready to defeat the monster. I love the texture created by the slanted sketch hatching to show the destruction. It nicely contrasts with the soft billowy look of the clouds above.

Game over for this little floating spirit. The other little neon buddies, Blinky, Inky and Clyde, hover nearby to lay a dead Pinky to rest. The Little Ecto Trap serves as a nice little open casket. Nice clean lines and solid colors. I enjoy the little expressions on their faces. Each spirit portrays a different emotion: shock, sadness, and reflective. Who knew these little guys could be so expressive? The angles, perspective, and slanted lines on the Etco Trap make the design dynamic.

05/06/14 Top 3 Pick; The Dark Knightmare

This hypnotizing, maniacal grin is share by both The Joker and Oogie Boogie. Batman replaces Jack Skellington, standing tall over the scene. Batman’s wind-blown cape creates interesting wild shapes also mimicked throughout Joker’s crazed appearance. The city scape along with the “HA” signs create wonderful visual complexity and keep the eye jumping around the design. The lighter long stokes in the background along with the lighter figures in the teeth nicely break up the solid yellow plains keeping the design active. The Batman logo background also mimics the pumpkin shape of The Pumpkin King, Jack.

This Dark Brotherhood sign would nicely mark the underground settlement in Skyrim. Wonderful, well-balanced composition with bilateral symmetry. I enjoy how the crossed arms create an arrow which points to the red hand print. The thick red outline really makes the design pop and serves as a nice clean trim around the design. The skeletal figure is mostly made up of soft grays, except for the white on the blades, giving them a highlight and a shine.

Isaac’s plasma cutter tool dominates the center of the design, a makeshift weapon for dismembering Necromorphs. This calm and simple design hides the gruesome and hideous nature of Dead Space. “There’s no shame in fear, my father told me, what matters is how we face it.” This dark Crow stands strong within the cool, arctic blues and whites of the lone wolf image. Wonderful image within an image. Jon’s dark garment is created out of a nice silhouette with the underlying image showing through to add textures and form. I love the wild strokes on the wolf’s collar area forming its fur and the appearance of ice crystals. At first glance I was captivated by the large image of the wolf, big and bright against the dark background. The flying crow naturally creates the form of the wolf’s eye slit. Beautiful symbolism showing the duality of Jon’s allegiance, to house Stark and his own brothers of The Night’s Watch.

“Power resides where men believe it resides. No more and no less. . . A shadow on the wall, yet shadows can kill. And ofttimes a very small man can cast a very large shadow.” In this design, Tyrion’s figure is bold and solid black (a shadow if you will) and most of the texture lies within the lion’s head. The checkered floor serves as a wonderful way to express space and perspective. The pattern is also used as a form of ornamentation to show the lavish Red Keep of King’s Landing. The use of the bright, golden color on the wall sconces, hair, and glowing eye unifies the scene with the larger lion image. This design definitely embodies the Lannister words, Hear Me Roar.

Every (under)dog has his day. Arya Stark will have her revenge, but will she lose herself in the process? She has known many names and perhaps more: Arry, Weasel, Boy, Horseface, Lumpyhead, Cat of the Canals, the Blind Girl, Mercy. The direwolf sigil in the background suggests she remembers who she is, but for how long? With seemingly all of Westeros on her list, she marches forward with her companion, Needle. The blue, gray, and black color scheme expresses the grim events that have occurred to her family and the dark path she is on. Her facial expression is harsh, angry, and determined. Wonderful sketch-like texture used for the figure adds complexity and stress. My favorite part of this design is the text. Having the type at an angle shows perspective, depth, and works as a path to destruction. Remember, all men must die.

Happy Star Wars Day! May the Fourth be with you! Awesome render of the X-Wing spacecraft. The amount of lines and details in this design are out of this world! I very much enjoy the old-style bold script type creating the fancy red frame around the design. The thin lines creating the sunburst around the craft are a great way to lead the eye to the main focal point and help it stand out from all the patterns contained in the design.

Another awesome Star Wars design today! A gruff render of the bounty hunter Boba Fett’s helmet. Wonderful use of large, bold strokes and shape to create a larger image. While this design looks plain, the dry brush effect causes a distressed look and gives it complexity. The eye is to meant to finish the shapes in certain areas which keeps this design interesting. The missing shapes and negative space give the design an element of mystery and intrigue as well, playing on the hidden identity of the man behind the helmet.

Ok, so this is not a Star Wars shirt, but it is a design I definitely enjoy. Viva La Revolution! Tyrion Lannister is absolutely one of my favorite Game of Thrones characters! This design renders Peter Dinklage in a heroic and revolutionary way which fits thematically with his persona in the series. You can almost hear the shouts of “Half Man!” in the background. The solid, basic black and white colors on a red shirt is bold and makes a statement which is why this combination is usually the color palette in most propaganda. I especially enjoy the little details. Like the little lion on his beret, the slash across his face, and the three-letter label.

80’s music is awesome, but this collection transforms any event into a blast! Wonderful concept in having these mini-cassettes represent the Autobot Transformers. I enjoy these bold, warm colors and the solid shapes. The lines that make up each cassette are clean, thin, and descriptive. Wonderful choice in having a graph background giving it a mathematic/geometric theme and when adding the gradient gives it a totally 80’s feel!

A rare Chrono Trigger design! Here we have the lovable nerd, Lucca, with her trusty Wondershot! I love simple mono color designs. I feel like by using a single color the lines of the design really stand out. The amount of beautiful details in the figure’s head and gun are lovely. The composition of the gear wheels fits nicely with the figure’s pose and the Chrono Trigger “clock” motif. The large type in a curve and at an angle completes the design creating a cute little united piece.

It’s Kurt Wagner, otherwise known as “The Amazing Nightcrawler”! This blue-skinned mutant looks perfectly at home teleporting through one of these Portals. No Aperture Science hardware required! His dark skin and outfit are nicely rendered out of the black negative space. Simple blue highlights accent his skin while the red trim with white hands complete the figure’s outline. His bottom half hanging out the bottom of the other portal is nicely highlighted in orange with the red bottom trim and white feet. I very much enjoy the composition of the design. I like that the figure seems to pop out of the top center portal, while his bottom half is in a position where it can’t possibly be connected, unless maybe you’re a contortionist!

SPOILER ALERT! Daenerys Targaryen (D.T.) has three dragons! Okay, so hopefully that wasn’t a spoiler, but seeing her ride Drogon sure is! She is accompanied by his brothers, Viserion and Rhaegal. They seem to be taking a midnight path-of-destruction flight. The cool, white-blue moon is large and appealing and central to the design. The silhouette of the dragons are nicely rendered and highlighted by the light of the large moon. I love how the warmth of the embers seem to come and delineate the tree line.

Anakin may not be the most honorable (or likable), but he’s doing his best impression of Game of Thrones‘ Eddard Stark. As Darth Vader, he certainly does play the “hand of the king” to Emperor Palpatine. Here’s an interesting thought. Worse leader? Palpatine? Or Joffrey? I really enjoy the glow of the lightsaber dead center. Wonderful use of grays to etch out the scene. His dark outfit and helmet are nicely highlighted by the Stark (see what I did there) white giving it a shine. Interesting and appropriate round window view background. It is cleverly made up of negative space.

These Feline Humanoids are ready to proudly guard their mountain. Wonderfully simple line render of this fierce race. I enjoy the large letter forms. If the figure was not in white, the letters would weigh heavier than the image in this design. The segmented letter forms resemble the armor and decor of this race’s culture. The selection of the tall, thin font used underneath seems to fit nicely and help give the type a block look, like a label under the image.

The old Ecto – 1 has seen better days, fighting ghosts and other entities. Now even though it is old, deteriorated, and in disrepair, this caddy still attracts phantasms. Wonderful use of the Glow-in-the-dark ink. I very much enjoy that the design changes and is enhanced in the dark. In the light the design is recognizable due to all the well drawn details, but in the dark the design really comes alive.

Is there a problem with the Earth’s gravitational pull?” A deliciously clever mash-up of Back to the Future and Scott Pilgrim! Scott Pilgrim is portrayed here by Marty McFly as he performs his “Go, Johnny Go!” scene from the end of Back to the Future. Wonderful line and color render of the figure. I enjoy the typography treatment of the letter forms especially the thunderbolt T’s. The large white letters nicely balance the colorful figure underneath.

04/28/14 Top 3 Pick; Attack on Dinosaur – Red

“T-Rex doesn’t want to be fed. He wants to hunt.” Just like the titans, this dinosaur is busting through the wall and ready to eat some unsuspecting humans! This red monotone design captures the terror, the fear of the moment. I enjoy the large T-Rex head dominating the top center. Having both the dinosaur’s head and the main human figure both in focus creates tension. The rest of the design, including the T-Rex’s body is out of focus and hazy which creates depth and is wonderfully descriptive without taking away from the emotion between the man and the dinosaur. The small highlight of white also nicely leads the eye between both figures. I also enjoy that the wall motif is not forced upon this design, but is a natural part of the design and occurs in the film. Kudos!

Hey, justice is supposed to be blind right? I very much enjoy the circular waves behind the figure. They appear to be sound waves, which Daredevil’s heightened senses detect as a sort of “echo location”, due to his blindness. This Maneki Neko design depicting Sailor Moon’s cat Luna is so adorable! This motif works well for this black guardian cat, which signifies luck, happiness, and fortune. I highly enjoy this bright, feminine color palette. The traditionally black cat is depicted in a wonderful shape of purple with a black gradient. Every time I see one of these Akira mash-ups, I can instantly hear Kaneda’s theme music. Kaneda is depicted here as Vader from Star Wars. This dark lord seems determined, headed for his Tie Fighter ( Okay, technically a Tie Advanced x1 prototype). I enjoy the movement of his wind-blown cape as he walks up the design. His vehicle is meticulously illustrated and brings the eye upward. The design is then nicely balanced by the red, asian characters in the bottom of the design.

This is a hilarious rendition of Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker’s escape in episode IV “minion-ified”. Minions are extremely popular these days and lend themselves well to depicting other characters by their recognizable humanoid features. I enjoy the wonderful perspective of the gray-scale background. I seem to laugh every time I look at their little funny yellow faces as they swoop through the air avoiding fire.
